Community Candlelight Ceremony: Pregnancy, Infant, and Child Loss

“When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan. When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widow or widower. When parents lose their child, there isn’t a word to describe them.” — President Reagan

About the event

The Community Candlelight Ceremony is held on International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day to surround parents who have lost a baby in pregnancy or infancy with love. We create a global 'Wave of Light' in honor of the lives we wish to celebrate by lighting a candle at 7 pm and keeping the light lit until those living in the next time zone light their candles.

In recognition of the indescribable tragedy of losing a child, the Community Candlelight Ceremony also acknowledges child loss in honor of Sherry Thomas. Sherry is an extraordinary mom who has experienced miscarriages (before 20 weeks), early neonatal death, miscarriage of multiples, ectopic pregnancy, and the excruciating pain of burying her 15-year-old son.

Help us raise awareness of pregnancy, infant, and child loss by attending the ceremony on October 15. Let our lights shine to increase the likelihood that grieving families will find the support they need. Let our voices be heard so that education and prevention efforts are improved to reduce the incidents that cause these ultimate tragedies.

Please RSVP to help us plan the night. The night will include decorating and labeling luminary bags, reading baby names or date(s) of loss(es), stories from Indiana residents, music, resources, refreshments, and opportunities to connect with trained professionals.

SBMOM community, we do not have to go through this alone.
