About the event

Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) is an annual campaign that focuses on raising awareness, activism, and community building to address the significant disparities in Black maternal health outcomes. It aims to amplify the voices of Black mothers, highlight the specific challenges they face, and advocate for policy and practice changes to improve health outcomes. The week includes a series of events, workshops, and discussions led by various organizations, healthcare professionals, and community advocates dedicated to improving maternal health among Black women.

Black Maternal Health Week was founded in 2018 by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA), a national network of Black women-led organizations and multidisciplinary professionals. BMHW is observed from April 11th to April 17th each year, strategically chosen to align with National Minority Health Month in the United States. The initiative seeks not only to shed light on the issues but also to celebrate the strength and resilience of Black mothers and families.
