About the Event

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month has been recognized in October in the United States since 1988.

In 2017, a large cry for support, recognition, and equal treatment rang out as the maternal mortality and infant mortality crises in the United States wreaked havoc on the Black Community. Black Mamas Matter Alliance birthed Black Maternal Health Week, and Sisters in Loss (infant loss support) was established in 2017.

Mrs. Central Indiana 2021 launched a year-long pregnancy and infant loss awareness campaign on Martin Luther King Jr Day, January 18, 2021.

On April 13, 2021, the White House formally recognized Black Maternal Health Week, April 11-17.

On November 3, 2021, Shades of Becoming a Mom Inc (SBMOM) was formed in Indiana and received 501c3 designation in February 2022.

SBMOM held its first Black maternal health and infant loss events virtually during Black Maternal Health Week 2022 with the support of Hancock Regional Hospital.

On October 15, 2022, SBMOM hosted an in-person Community Candlelight Ceremony: Pregnancy, Infant, Child Loss service in partnership with Eskenazi Health at 6 pm at New Birth Fellowship Church, 3515 West Vermont Street in Indianapolis, IN. Twenty-four babies were honored.

October 17-21, SBMOM will launch and promote #BlackBabyLossAwarenessWeek. We encourage mommas throughout the US of Black and brown angels to amplify your voices! We invite allies to do the same.
